Bought A House With A Dock? 3 Tips For Taking Care Of Your Dock

Posted on: 4 January 2018

If you recently purchased a lake house with a dock, you are now responsible for taking care of that dock. If you want the dock to last and to enjoy the benefits of having your own dock, you need to be up to the task of taking care of it.

Take Pictures

One of the first things that you need to do is go down to your dock and take some pictures. Take a few pictures that allow you to look at the entire scope of the dock.

Then, take a few close up pictures. Focus your close up pictures on where the dock meets with the land. Also, take some pictures of what the boards look like on the dock.

These pictures will serve as a references for you. It can be tough to remember what you dock looked like six months ago and to identify changes in your dock. If you take pictures of your dock a few times a year, you can compare the pictures to see how your dock has changed. This can help you identify the type of maintenance that you need to engage in to keep you dock looking nice.

Check All Bolts, Fasteners & Hardware

Every few months, go outside and check all the bolts, fasteners and hardware on your dock. Make sure that everything is really secure and tight. If you find any bolts or fasteners that are loose, use your tools to tighten them up. If you find any hardware that looks like it is getting worn down or rusted, apply a sealant over the hardware. If the hardware seems like it is really rusted out, you are going to want to replace the hardware. You don't want to leave rusty hardware in place.

Keep The Dock Clean

Finally, make sure to keep your dock clean. Don't let debris build up on your dock. Debris could break down a wood dock and cause staining on other dock materials. Piles of leaves could also attract critters to your dock.

It is a good idea to pressure wash your deck throughout the year. Pressure washing your dock is the fastest way to keep it clean. If you have a wood dock, protect the wood by sealing it with a waterproof and environmentally friendly product every few years. Wood docks look great and can last a long time if you keep them properly sealed.

If you just bought a lake home with a dock, take pictures of the dock so you can more easily detect changes over time. Check all bolts, fasteners and hardware every few months and tighten up anything that is lose and replace anything that is rusty. Keep your dock clean and sealed to ensure that it lasts for a long time. Contact a service, like Abbotts' Construction Services Inc., for more help.
